Andean Bear: scope of natural history
Judith Figueroa and Marcelo Stucchi

The Andean bear is the only representative of the family Ursidae that inhabits South America. It is distributed throughout much of the Andes, in a variety of ecosystems, between 200 and 4750 meters.

Due to intense hunting and the destruction of the areas where they live, in Peru is considered an endangered species. Therefore, national law prohibits hunting, mining, transportation and / or export for commercial purposes. In the same Thus, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora (CITES) it includes in its Appendix I, as a species vulnerable to extinction, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as vulnerable.

However, Peru still few research initiatives of this kind, in some cases, due to the relative difficulty that means developing field studies, and in others, lack of adequate counseling . Therefore, the production of this book is to share part of the experience gained by the authors over several years of study, in order to motivate students and researchers to do work with this species, and people in general to learn more about the only South American bear.

addition to presenting some of the results of the project "Distribution and State of the Andean bear in the National System of Protected Natural Areas of Peru", this book covers biological, ecological and field methods proposed by the authors and other researchers.
