Yusuf's trilogy
BAL is the third film in the trilogy of Yusuf. This trilogy began to take shape when revising a screenplay he had written a long time and had to outline the story of Yusuf towards end of adolescence, as shown in Sut / Milk. While working on the character of Yusuf, I started thinking about the future of the young (Yumurta / egg) and in the past (Bal / Honey). Thus was born the trilogy. I started with Yumurta / Egg perhaps because the character wanted to undress slowly until you reach the core. The trilogy can be seen as a long flashback, but at no time are period films. All spent at the present time and in different places, relationships and income levels differ.
I have wondered if the three Yusuf are the same. Prefer not to answer for not revealing their secrets, the direct and indirect relationship between the films, and its mysteries.
My personal experiences
I based on my experiences to shape the character of Yusuf. You can say that Yusuf has part of me inside. There are references to my childhood in the three scripts and I think I've been able to capture realistically the problems and search for Yusuf. My child is very present in BAL / HONEY. The problems in school when trying to learn to read and write, the questions he asked and no one answered, the intense cruelty and richness of nature. In many ways, the child shapes his personality as you discover the world with curiosity. Can that a misunderstanding led him to commit a naive error, dreams, joys and sorrows allow it to reach the truth. I hope that BAL / HONEY allows us to get to the truth of Yusuf.
An unusual place
For Yakup Yusuf and his father, the forest is a magical place full of mysteries. And out of this enchanted world. It is much more than the site where they will find their livelihoods. It is another world populated by old and huge trees, mysterious creatures like the mule and the hawk that accompany them. It was not easy to find a location large trees with huge trunks. I struggled find the right place to put the hives and that was at the height of the images I wanted to capture in BAL / HONEY. We shot in several forests where hives have hung for centuries. There were about 30 to 40 km between them were at different altitudes above sea level and none had the same species of trees.
Yakup the beekeeper
Yakup, Yusuf's father is a beekeeper to collect honey from the black bee, honey is considered the best in the world and the region itself. This honey therapy is an ancient world, unspoilt nature and sacred knowledge to the people of the region. Fewer the beekeepers who collect it, and Yakup profession is doomed to disappear. It's hard work and dangerous. Special hives should be placed in the canopy in mountainous areas. Yusuf's admiration for his father is due in part to his amazing career. In my opinion, has much to do with his future vocation, poetry.
Father absence
can not say that Yusuf trilogy lacks a father figure, especially after seeing the powerful bond that unites father and son in BAL / HONEY. But it was to show how Yusuf lives after the father's absence, how to compensate for the absence. Viewed from the psychology, the early loss of father would explain the authoritarian relationship with his mother in Sut / Milk. May explain the fragility, shyness and lack of decision Yumurta / Egg. But I am dealing with psychology in my stories. I try to reflect, to portray a situation to a more spiritual level. Instead of dissecting the existence in the psychological laboratory and confining life cause-effect relationships, try to show something bigger. I tried and I hope I got that trilogy Yusuf analyze the perspective of the Prophets Yusuf Yakup and the hand of dreams and from the perspective of hope and fear. Only then is complete.
Filming near the Black Sea coast
Rodamos BAL / HONEY Çamlihemsin in the village and surrounding areas. It is located in the province of Rize, near the Black Sea in northeastern Turkey. I chose this region for nature. Only there I found the woods looking for, but the geographical conditions gave us no shooting, especially when we had to work in the woods. Could only reach a certain point in the car and the rest of the road by foot, carrying all the equipment for a good distance. We shot in rugged locations where we could barely keep his balance. And time in the Black Sea coast is unpredictable. In an hour can make sun, rain and fog lifted, which was a major problem for continuity. Now, looking at my diary, I see that it rained 39 days of the 48 that were there.
humanity's childhood
If definiésemos modern times as the majority of humanity, I would say that the locations of BAL / HONEY still in the infancy of mankind . We shot in mountain villages that will soon be abandoned. Still trying to live according to traditions and the conditions and rules set by nature. However, natural water resources are destroyed to build huge dams, which is very worrying.
Stuttering Yusuf Yusuf
just entering school and learn to read and write. When alone with his father, is able to read slowly without mistakes. But in class, he gets nervous and starts to stutter. His teammates laugh at him and takes refuge in silence and solitude. Just as for Yusuf Sut / Milk, who just graduated from high school and is declared unfit for military service, unable to read aloud high in front of their peers is a turning point for the young Yusuf. All mock and Yusuf is enclosed in itself, developing a strong bond with words and poetry.
The search for the young Yusuf
Yusuf We the youth in different cities and towns for months. We went to countless elementary schools, but none of the hundreds of children interviewed convinced me to embody Yusuf child. After two months, I decided to change region. It was a risky decision because throwing overboard all the work done by the team casting: actors had already chosen for many roles. We moved a few hundred miles from where we were. It was an almost uninhabited region, with very few children, joblessness and emigration. One day, he returned to find a location, I found Bora High riding his bicycle. I got out and introduced myself. I felt immediately that I had found the boy he was looking for an intelligent, sensitive, living in his own world. Transforming Yusuf Bora
During the filming of BAL / HONEY, Bora High I was seven. Bora bears little resemblance to Yusuf, is very sociable, and should be interpreted. It was not easy to transform into Yusuf. We strive and we had a lot of patience. I explained how it was Yusuf scene to scene and develop a relationship based on trust. I worked with him as an adult. Bora had the courage to surrender, but I was always careful not to abuse your trust and admiration. It is an experience that taught me a lot. Having no children, I have no experience with children. But never forget the enthusiasm and effort Bora, or other children. And I want to acknowledge the help provided by Tülin Özen actress and casting director Kutay Sandikçi child to achieve better understanding of children.
spiritual realism
I learned a lot in the four years I have been performing Yusuf trilogy. It has helped shape my style as a filmmaker, I call for the time being "spiritual realism."
During this period, I not only have been concerned with film elements, like the image, actors, sound, the locations, but also by technicians, funding. I learned a lot. Making a movie is like discovering even define itself through Mirror it represents. Not only for the director, but for the whole team. For example, my mother had a small role in Yumurta / Egg and Sut / milk, and when he saw the house first, I said it looked a lot like the house where I had grown up. Began to tell me many details, stories and family know that I used later in the other two films.
